Long before European settlement, the San Diego region was home to the Kumeyaay people, whose presence in the area reaches back thousands of years. In 1542, explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo entered San Diego Bay during a Spanish expedition along the Pacific Coast.
Permanent European settlement followed in 1769 with the establishment of the Presidio of San Diego and Mission San Diego de Alcalá, beginning Spain’s colonial presence in Alta California. After Mexico gained independence from Spain, San Diego became part of Mexico before transferring to the United States following the Mexican-American War.
California entered the Union in 1850, and San Diego was incorporated that year and designated the seat of San Diego County. Rail connections, harbor development, military activity, tourism, and later aerospace and technology industries helped transform the city during the twentieth century.
Today, the city remains closely connected to the military, international trade, tourism, research, biotechnology, and its position along the United States-Mexico border.
